Dutch Fort

The Dutch fort in Batticaloa is one of the most important landmarks. It was built 1658 on the Island of Pulyantivu as a defence post. The Dutch build it to defense themselves from their enemies, the French. The ramparts of the Fort are built with solid rocks, since man did not discover cement yet. According to Folk Lore elephants were used to transport the rocks to the construction site. The watchtowers constructed at the four conners of the building enabled the sentries to have a good view of the open sea. A moat, surrounding the Fort was constructed for additional protection from the enemy. Canons were installed within and outside the fort for the same purpose. The Dutch fort currently houses a few government offices.
